In January, there is a slight chance that some parts of the UK could be wetter than usual, mainly in western Scotland and the Midlands. January will likely see average or slightly above average precipitation in the UK. The ECMWF's data shows nothing out of the ordinary for the UK in December or February. There are no indications of any significant precipitation anomalies in the next three months, suggesting relatively average levels throughout the winter season. In addition, with La Niña active this winter, this usually increases the chance for the northern half of Europe to experience influxes of cold, northerly air. While this is not great news if you're hoping for a lot of snow this winter, there is always the potential for intermittent colder periods, even when the forecasts indicate a generally mild outlook. The UK is not alone is this regard, with the forecasts suggesting the majority of the European continent is more likely to experience positive temperature anomalies than anything else. The data shows that February won't buck this trend, and in fact it is even more likely to see above average temperatures than the two previous months. This pattern could then continue, with indications that January will also see temperatures warmer than normal for the time of year. Looking at the data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts ( ECMWF), December is predicted to bring temperatures that are slightly above average in the UK. It seems at this early stage that we will not be in for a very cold winter. So what might the weather in the coming three months look like?
